Experience

Varun Mowar is a Director at DMD Advocates and heads the Investigations & Governance Advisory practice. Varun, a Chartered Accountant, and a London Business School graduate is a highly experienced forensic accounting and finance professional with in-depth experience in forensic investigations, accounting, auditing and financial systems and controls. His career spans over 20 years of forensic and compliance risk engagements in India, US, and other countries at Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), KPMG (India and US) and Adobe Software System.

Considered a foremost forensic and investigation professional in India, Varun has conducted some of the largest and most complex investigative engagements in India. These include issues such as financial statement fraud, embezzlement and asset misappropriation, bribery and corruption, diversion of funds, economic offences, regulatory non-compliance, code of conduct violations, ethical violations, etc. Varun has also worked extensively with some of the largest investors in the world and conducted pre-acquisition due diligence and post-acquisition investigations on their behalf.

Varun’s core strength lies in conducting complex investigations using a combination of accounting principles, data analytics and business intelligence. Further, he has worked extensively with data scientists and has perfected the use of data analytics for proactive fraud prevention as well as investigations.

In his previous role at Alvarez & Marsal, Varun was a Senior Director in the Disputes & Investigation services where he led the corporate channel assisting some of the largest corporate and investor clients in India and globally. He led multiple cross-border investigations into matters around financial irregularities, business malpractices and bribery & corruption, where he worked with tier 1 law firms like Hughes Hubbard & Reeds, Freshfields and O’Melveny & Myers.

In January 2021, Varun became an entrepreneur and has been running his own advisory firm where he has been advising clients on matters like growth strategy, financial management, financial reporting, corporate finance, and financial modelling and advising them on how to be Investor ready.
